Sermon Title: Open Heart

Context: Matthew 13:19-23

(Matthew 13:19) "When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road.

(Matthew 13:20) "The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;

(Matthew 13:21) yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away. (Matthew 13:22) "And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

(Matthew 13:23) "And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty."

Preaching Note

1. Listening

People listen to a lot of words into the world. Especially, Christians come to the church for listening to the Words of God. To deliver the Words of God, church offers preaching to people who come to the church.

However, as people cannot listen to all voices into the world, Christians try to listen to the Words of God, but they cannot listen to all Words of God. Related to this issue, Jesus says The Parable of the Sowers.

Q.1 What do you most want to hear in church, and what do you most hate to hear?

2. The Parable of the Sowers

According to the Matthew Chapter 13, there is the Parable of the Sowers. In this parable, God is described as a farmer. Seeds mean people who are in the world by sowing of God. While sowing seeds, which mean people, God delivers message to them all, but all people do not listen to the Words of God. Related to issue, there are four cases in this parable.

The first case is Seeds Sown on the Road. In the case of seeds sown on the road, no word is heard at all. As a result, evil snatches away seeds which are on the road (Matthew 13:19). According to the origin of Greek, evil means split each other. A person who does not listen to the Word of God at all will be separated from God by evil.

The second case is Seeds Sown on the Rocky Place. In the case of seeds sown on the rocky place, they listen to the Words of God immediately with joy (Verse 20). However, as there is no root, they fall away from the Words quickly (Verse 21). It is Three Hump Day, which means 작심삼일 in Korean language. In this case, although people listen to the Words of God, they do not practice it.

The third case is Seeds Sown on the Thorns. People who are in this case, they listen to the Words of God. Then, they consider it very carefully, but use it for the worry of the world, and the deceitfulness of wealth (Verse 22). It is a case where the Words of God is abused to satisfy individual greed.

Q.2 How do you receive God's Word?

3. Open Heart

The last case is Seeds Sown on the Good Soil. In this case, people listen to the Words of God, and understand it well. Then, there are a lot of fruits as a result. Good soil needs sunlight, water, and plenty of nutrients. For it, good soil suffers draught, floods, and stink from excrement. However, as However, because it has endured these sufferings, the soil has a good composition.

To bear good fruit, people must focus on and understand God's Word. However, what is important is the process of enduring the hardships necessary to become a good soil rather than the result of bearing a lot of fruit. To overcome suffering spiritually, people need the Word of God, and they need an open heart to accept it. Because the process of becoming a good soil involves pain, abundant fruits are not felt. However, if Christians can overcome this hardship with the Word of God, they can feel the valuable result of the fruit beyond the hardship. I hope that you will be able to accept the Word of God through an open heart, overcome the pain of the world, and bear valuable spiritual fruits.

Q.3 Have you ever overcome hardships with the Word of God?
