[03/21/21] “Continue in the conviction”

2 Timothy 3:14-17

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Unbiblical messages abound in the world. A most popular one would be “Love yourself.” Loving oneself is an instinct, so no emphasis is needed. It is a given condition of a human being. We automatically love ourselves. The Bible tells us that self-love is such thing. It is a given human condition. The Bible does not ever instruct us to love ourselves but to love others as ourselves.

Today, Paul warns us about the last days. There will be many who will love only themselves. Self-love will be promoted as a virtue when it is not. The virtue would be selfless love for others. And that is what we have been convinced of through the teachings of the Bible, especially through the life of Jesus and the lives of the apostles.

Without reading the Bible night and day, when we are exposed to the teachings of the world, we would not have the right tools by which we can judge the teachings of the world. Without reading the Bible, we will not have any conviction on any of the moral issues and will be swayed by the teachings of the world that have not been approved by the Bible.

Convictions are important. We cannot always think about the matters every time we need decide. Sometimes, we just need to know what is right and what is wrong without thinking too long. Conviction is what enables us to make an ethical decision instantaneously. Is abortion wrong? If we have a conviction about the utmost value of a human life, there is no need for a debate. It is wrong. It must be avoided. It cannot be recommended with joy. There must be an exception, of course: only if the mother cannot survive the labor. Without the ethical convictions established by studying the Bible, we will hesitate and will be influenced by situations.

Let us make our Bible our foundation for convictions, in which we will abide for the rest of our lives.

Amen.
