Psalm 119:9-11

9 How can a young person stay on the path of purity?

By living according to your word.

10 I seek you with all my heart;

do not let me stray from your commands.

11 I have hidden your word in my heart

that I might not sin against you.

Jesus said, "Man shall not live by bread alone,

but by every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matt 4:4).

We hunger not for bread, because we are physically filled normally.

But are we normally filled spiritually? Why do we feel starved spiritually all the time?

Because we do nit treasure the spiritual bread right in front of us: Bible!

Open it, read it, be filled and satisfied. Stop being starved.

Reading God's Word helps us understand God better and please God more.

A good intention alone does not guarantee a good relationship.

I must understand someone better to treat that person better.

It is same with God. We love God. We have a good intention toward Him.

However, are we pleasing God?

Are we treating Him based on a correct understanding of Him?

The Pharisees believed that they were pleasing God,

while in fact they were distressing the Holy Spirit by their hypocrisy.

Though reading Scripture, they missed the points because they were busy

using the knowledge of Scripture to build the wall of self-righteousness

against God and people. Instead of treasuring God's Word, they merely used it

to look better than others.

What does it mean to treasure God's Word?

It is expressed in Psalm 119:11 as "hiding God's Word in one's heart."

Hiding in Greek is צָפַן.

This verb was used in Exodus 2:2 to describe

Moses's mother shushing a mouth

in order to keep Moses, a seed of hope, hidden.

Was she able to keep him hidden for long?

No, something alive is hard to hide.

As we hide God's Word, the seed of hope, in our heart,

it will sprout, grow, and provide shade and fruit for us.

We work so hard not to sin. Just as the Pharisees missed the mark,

we also often miss the mark, which means we sin.

How can we not sin? It only begins by treasuring God's Word.

Amen.
