Sermon Title: Were Not Our Hearts Burning?

Context: The Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35)

13. And behold, on that very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia from Jerusalem.

14. And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place.

15. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them.

16. But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.

17. And He said to them, “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they came to a stop, looking sad.

18. One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You possibly the only one living near Jerusalem who does not know about the things that happened here in these days?”

19. And He said to them, “What sort of things?” And they said to Him, “Those about Jesus the Nazarene, who proved to be a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people,

20. and how the chief priests and our rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and crucified Him.

21. But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

22. But also some women among us left us bewildered. When they were at the tomb early in the morning,

23. and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive.

24. And so some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see.”

25. And then He said to them, “You foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

26. Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to come into His glory?”

27. Then beginning with Moses and with all the Prophets, He explained to them the things written about Himself in all the Scriptures.

28 And they approached the village where they were going, and He gave the impression that He was going farther.

29. And so they strongly urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them.

30. And it came about, when He had reclined at the table with them, that He took the bread and blessed it, and He broke it and began giving it to them.

31. And then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.

32. They said to one another, “Were our hearts not burning within us when He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?”

33. And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them,

34. saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon!”

35. They began to relate their experiences on the road, and how He was recognized by them at the breaking of the bread.

Preaching Note

1. Rationality

Cleopas and the other person were going to the village, Emmaus. Emmaus means warm well. In verse 14, They talked about the resurrection of Jesus who was killed on the cross. While they discussed this issue, Jesus came up and walked with them. However, in verse 16, as they discussed each other, their eyes could not focus on Jesus. They could not recognize him. As they discussed the resurrection of Jesus with strong Logos, even if Jesus was closed to them, they could not recognize him. As their eyes were strong with their discussion, they could not feel the existence of resurrected Jesus. If we cannot feel the existence of Jesus, theology and knowledge about Bible are nothing.

Q. How do you understand about God?

2. Emotion

In verse 17, Jesus asked them, “What are you talking about?” Through their gloom, they turned Logos into Pathos. With gloomy emotion, they saw Jesus. In verse 18, one of them, Cleopas, rebuked Jesus and asked why he did not know about the death of Jesus while in Jerusalem. In verse 19, Cleopas confessed Jesus was a real, mighty, and powerful prophet. In verse 20, he said that the chief priests and the rulers crucified him. In verse 21, two people were hoping that Jesus will redeem Israel. They hated the high priests and leaders who killed Jesus. Because of this emotion, even if they heard the resurrection of him by women, they could not focus on his resurrection. Their hearts were filled with the disappointment of losing Jesus. With emotions, although they loved Jesus, they could not recognize him.

Q. How do you feel about God?

3. Personality

In verse 25, the answer of Jesus was “foolish”. Then, he added that they are slow of heart to believe. In this sentence, belief means Ethos, identity, and personality that prove who Christians are. In verse 26, he said that as Jesus suffered pain, he could get into the glory. Jesus entered glory by suffering. While he suffered, how was he feeling at that time? He loved the world. He loved the people. However, the result was death. By the people Jesus loved hands, he crucified at the cross. Ahead of this fate, Jesus even cried while praying in the garden of Gethsemane. He asked God to take this cup from him. However, he decided to follow the will of God, and he entered the glory. He overcame his emotional pain and proved his personality as a son of God.

What about the consequence of entering glory? As the son of God, he was resurrected. Furthermore, in verse 29, Jesus entered the home of those who talked on the street. In verse 30, he broke the bread, blessed it, and shared it with two people. In Greek, the phrase ‘bless’ is eulogēsen. The origin of this word means praise. While Jesus broke the bread, he praised God.

In Hebrew, the phrase ‘praise’ is yadah. The origin of this word means to throw and cast. Praise means to throw all power to God. As Jesus threw his power to God, in verse 31, two people could be opened their eyes. As they had strong with Logos in verse 16, they could not recognize Jesus. However, through this blessing, because Jesus connected God with two people through spirituality, their eyes were open. If Jesus could not control his emotional pain, their eyes could not open. And they confessed each other in verse 32, “Were Not Our Hearts Burning?”

Q. As a Christian, have you ever had a burning heart?
