Sermon Title: Reasons to Listen to the Words of Jesus and Practice

Context: Matthew 7:24-29

(Matt 7: 24) "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

(Matt 7: 25) The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

(Matt 7: 26) But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

(Matt 7: 27) The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

(Matt 7: 28) When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,

(Matt 7: 29) because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Preaching Note

1. Matthew 7:24-29 is Jesus' sermon on the mount, emphasizing 'practice' as the conclusion of his sermon to his disciples. In verse 24, 26 are expressed to put into practice (Jesus' teaching). Those who now hear the teachings of Jesus do not have benefit in hearing. “They must practice what they hear.” In the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount, first, Jesus speaks of those who enter through the difficult and narrow gate of life, and those who enter through the easy and wide gate of destruction, which is the gate of destruction (Matthew 7:13-14). Second, a good tree that bears good fruit. and bad trees that produce bad fruit (Matthew 7:15-23). Third, the wise man who builds his house on the rock by hearing the words of Jesus and putting them into practice; It speaks of a foolish man who builds a house (Matthew 7:24-27).

Q. For being a wiseman, what kinds of practice are you doing?

2. Matthew 7:24-29 is a parable of the wise man who builds his house on rock and the foolish man who builds his house on sand. “Therefore, he who hears my words and puts them into practice will be said to be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock” (Verse 24). Jesus grew up in a carpenter's family and appears to be well versed in construction. The place where Jesus is speaking is near the Sea of Galilee. Sand is pushed out of the sea and piled up. In summer, the surface of the piled sand is hard. Wise builders dig a dozen feet from the surface and build the foundations of their houses on the lowest level of rock. When the winter rain falls and the Jordan River overflows its banks, houses built on rock overcome the flood. But houses built on sand simply and easily collapse in floods.

“It rained, and there were floods, and the winds blew and hit the house, but it did not fall. for he built the house upon the rock.” (Verse 25). As you go through life, it rains. There are also floods. The wind blows too. A wise person who hears the words of Jesus, put them into practice, builds his life on the words of Jesus, overcomes rain and wind. When the foundation is strong, the existence does not collapse. Growth takes place only when the foundation is strong. Faith grows only when we hear the words of Jesus and put them into practice.

Q. What is your foundation for overcoming challenges from the world?

3. But whoever hears these words of mine and does not do them will be said to be like a foolish man who built his house on sand.” (Verse 26). Those who only listen to the words of Jesus and do not put them into practice walk the easy and comfortable path. Those who do not put into practice the word of the Lord are fools. The wise disciples are those who hear the words of their master and do the word. But fools are those who listen to the word comfortably and do nothing.

“It rained, and there was a flood, and the wind blew, and it struck the house, and it fell. And the collapse was huge.” (Verse 27). Those who only hear the words of Jesus and do not put them into practice will fall apart in the face of rain and wind. If you walk the easy and comfortable path, there will be no good fruits. The way Jesus walked on the cross and the way to practice love were difficult and hard. It was a narrow road that people didn't want to go. For Jesus, the way of the cross and the way to practice love was God's will, so he took God's word as the foundation and built his life on it. Jesus walked vigorously on the path of bearing good fruits to establish the kingdom of God on this earth. The reason we need to listen to Jesus' words and do them is because our life and existence will become stronger, we will be able to develop the strength to overcome the rains and winds of life, and we can experience the kingdom of God.

Q. Have you ever followed the teachings of Jesus while overcoming the difficulties of the world?
