Sermon Title: Reason and purpose of Worship Service

Context: Titus 2:11-14

(Titus 2:11) For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.

(Titus 2:12) It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,

(Titus 2:13) while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

(Titus 2:14) who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

Preaching Note

Today's text tells us why God educates us in verse 12a. “Its grace educates us, to put away ungodliness and worldly passions, ...”. It is saying that God educates us because we live according to unholiness and worldly greed. And in verses, 12b and 13, the purpose of God's education is stated as follows. “To live prudently, righteously, and reverently in this world. So, we look forward to the blessed hope, the glory of the great God and of our Savior Jesus Christ.”

God's purpose in educating us is to prepare us for ultimate salvation, building up the virtues of prudence (temperance), justice, and godliness. Verse 13 speaks of ultimate salvation. The “appearance of the glory of Christ” mentioned in verse 13 is the second appearance. The first manifestation is a past event in which God's grace to save all people was revealed (v. 11). The second manifestation is a future event in which the glory of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ will be revealed (v. 13).

Between the appearance of the past and the appearance of the future is the education of God. The reason God educates us through grace is that we are engrossed in ungodly and worldly desires. God's purpose in educating us through grace is so that we may free ourselves from this greed and live prudently, righteously, and godly while on earth, preparing us for ultimate salvation at the return of Christ.

Christ gave himself up for our ultimate salvation (verse 14). God educates us through grace. The purpose of God's education is to save us, and God's method of education is to give up his body. The love of the cross.

The worship service is the field where God's education is carried out. Through today's text, we must clearly understand the reason and purpose of the worship service. We offer worship service because we are engrossed in ungodliness and worldly desires. And the purpose of the worship service is to prepare for ultimate salvation while accumulating the virtues of temperance (prudence), justice and godliness through God's education. The worship service is a place to experience God's education. I sincerely wish that you will experience the grace of God and the love of the cross through the worship service for this year and that your soul will grow and become beautiful this year.
