"My grandfather passed away
after hearing his favorite song, ..."
"My grandfather passed away after hearing his
favorite song, and I, as a person admittedly obsessed
with music, can only smile at that. Even more so
because we, his family, were able to sing his favorite
song for him. And not just for him, because I am sure
he was singing with us.
Dylan Thomas famously advised the reader, "Do not
go gentle into that good night," and for a long time,
I romanticized the idea of meeting death that way.
But this past Monday, I realized firsthand, that a
glorious death had nothing to do with any of that.
It is an awesome—meaning awe-inspiring—and
startling thing to be a witness to death.
But my grandfather's death was full of grace, and
it was a wonderful death, too. I will dearly hold
this image forever: He died in my grandmother's
arms with his children and grandchildren crowded
around him. And I cried then not just because of
sadness—because even now, I don't think I have
completely come to terms with his passing—but I
cried because the love that was evident in that room,
especially the love that my grandmother showed and
no doubt continues to possess, was overwhelming in
that moment.
So this tribute is as much to my grandmother as
it is to my grandfather. Because even now, it is hard
to think of one of them without the other. The two of
them were, clearly, the best of friends; to quote a
writer far better than I, at times, they seemed to be
each the other's world entire. And I know I'm still
young, but I can only think, what more could a
husband and wife ask for? And what better example
could they set for their children and grandchildren?
And it's not that that made it look easy—that's
missing the point. Easy really had nothing to do with
it. Because when love and devotion is so pure and
steadfast, what else could matter in the end?
This is a small part of their legacy to us: a love and
sense of family that is unquestionable and a source of
endless comfort. I could never thank God enough for
blessing me with this family.
I love all of you so much, and I thank my
grandparents for nurturing and passing on that
love to me."

Dylan Thomas
